Reveil travels West on live audio feeds from streamers around the world at daybreak, making a loop over one earth day. We welcome your live environmental streams from ecological points of listening of all kinds — rural, urban and other — over the Dawn Chorus Day weekend. We especially welcome proposals for streams from less heard locations and projects, Pacific and Atlantic timezones, and the global South. We can provide detailed help with streaming, and sometimes equipment.
Reveil is accompanied by a virtual project space with selected transmission works programmed by organisations of the Acoustic Commons. In addition, we are calling for live works that respond to the broadly ecological theme of the event.
Many of the streams for Reveil come from Soundcamps, small gatherings in places of acoustic / ecological interest. Past soundcamps have happened on roofs, in urban green patches and remote rural areas, involving from several hundred participants to one. They can be a recurring event or a one-off. Last year there were 55. Together the soundcamps form a lightweight distributed network, in the frame of Reveil.

ABOUT
Reveil is a collective production by streamers at listening points around the earth. Starting on the morning of Saturday 30 April in South London near the Greenwich Meridian, the broadcast will pick up feeds one by one, tracking the sunrise west from microphone to microphone, following the wave of intensified sound that loops the earth every 24 hours at first light.

The Reveil broadcast will be played out at Stave Hill Ecological Park in a portable auditorium by local young people with sound artist Michael Speers and architects Public Works.
It appears online as a parallel expanded radio event, linking local listening points and projects in a transient earthly frame.
Swapping, streaming, assembling a collectively produced long radio form, Reveil imagines by being part of acoustic commons in the making.

Streams come from a wide variety of locations, at a time of day when human sounds are relatively low, even in densely populated urban sites. This tends to open the sound field to a more diverse ecology than usual. The Reveil broadcast makes a space for this surplus by largely avoiding speech and music, gravitating to places where human and non human communities meet and soundworlds overlap.
CREDITS
REVEIL relays the sounds of live open microphones on the Locus Sonus soundmap, operated by the Acoustic Commons network, together with projects by the Cyberforest programme, BIOM Open Microphone network, radio.earth, and elsewhere. It is made up of sounds freely provided by streamers, spanning formal research, long term art and activist works, domestic projects, and one-off transmissions.
Reveil 2022 will be mixed live by Soundcamp in London UK (Grant Smith, Hannah Kemp-Welch), Crete GR (Maria Papadomanolaki) and guest mixers to be confirmed.

The Reveil project is anticipated and informed by transects recorded by Gordon Hempton and Bernie Krause in the 1980's and 1990's that re-presented and extended auditions of the dawn chorus across large areas, as well as variants that captured the progress of Spring moving up over North America. The idea of a round-the-world dawn chorus recording lasting 24 hours has appeared periodically on wildlife and nature recordist lists. Gordon Hempton and the ornithologist Don Kroodsma have both imagined such a trajectory as a kind of aural surfing. In 2010 in collaboration with Páll Thayer, Ragnar Helgi Ólafsson made the installation DayBreak, Forever, which used a script to create a sequence through the Locus Sonus streams in much the same way Reveil would do later.
