Birch bark has traditionally been used for paper. Birch leaves are so thin that they let a lot of light through, creating dappled shade, which can support a floral under-storey including bluebells, violets and daffodils. Daffodil stems can be seen appearing in Winter. Behind the birches is a scrubby tangle of native privet (semi evergreen) and hedge maple.
