Streamboxes are small transmitters with open microphones, sharing live environmental sounds.

If you come across a streambox, please be aware that sounds nearby are being broadcast.

LISTEN

The live audio streams are available on a public soundmap:
https://locusonus.org/soundmap/
and a server list:
https://locus.creacast.com:9001/

To listen, go to the map or the list and open a stream in a browser.

Streams may run for years or on a single occasion. They are subject to uncertainties of networks, power and other factors.

TECH

For more information on transmitting environmental sounds: set up a stream.

To assemble a streambox kit or build from scratch: streambox.

ABOUT

The streamboxes use open source software by Stéphane Cousot and others to capture, digitise and send live sounds to an Icecast server maintained by Locus Sonus at the Art School of Aix-en-Provence.

The devices are a development of those first made for Locustream (2006—ongoing) by Locus Sonus. They have benefitted over the years from involvement of many contributors, and recently from the framework provided by Acoustic Commons, a 3 year small cooperation project for Creative Europe, which developed a creative technical network to exchange sounds from places of acoustic interest in Europe and Japan.
